The Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

The symptoms of fibromyalgia are usually summed up in painful areas across the entire body, general malaise and stiffness of the muscles and joints in the morning as well as muscle pain that can be site specific or everywhere. Symptoms other than those traditionally associated with fibromyalgia include fatigue, sleep problems and disorders, as well as anxiety. For a physician to make the correct diagnosis, it is important for the physician to make a comprehensive review of the patient to make sure that their symptoms and signs are consistent with condition of fibromyalgia.

Other symptoms that may arise from fibromyalgia are depression, headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, pain, tender areas of the body, pain, swelling and numbness of the body, morning stiffness, and irritable bowel syndrome. For the most part, the most predominant symptom of fibromyalgia is pain. In more than 97 percent of all fibromyalgia patients, pain is the one common symptom that affects them. In my case, fibromyalgia affects me the most when I am sleeping and when I wake up. For some reason, I am especially sore and tender in my back, calves and shoulder which makes for a restless night of sleep. Tender points on my body are in my neck, the inside of my elbows and whenever I touch them it is extremely painful – almost to the point where I tear up.

The tender points, as they are commonly referred to by physicians, are usually located in specific parts of the body which are commonly located near tendons, joints and ligaments. Fatigue is also a major issue – and not just the fatigue that comes from not being able to get any real stage II REM sleep – but the fatigue that comes with major muscle pain and issues that causes the patient to become exhausted and weary. This is horrible because in this kind of tired, always stressed environment the added physical exhaustion that comes with fatigue often exacerbates mental issues that arise, such as depression.
