Teach Yourself to Beat Insomnia

Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital has found that with a mixture of quitting poor sleep habits and using meditation to clear the mind before sleep may be better than traditional insomnia treatments.

The studies show that by using a sort of cognitive therapy an insomnia patient can change their attitude and action they might be able to get a better nights sleep without using any pills to help them achieve REM sleep. Researchers believe that insomnia isn't necessarily something that effects patients during night, but is a 24-hour cycle of hyperarousal that effects them during the day as well. Researchers claim that by teaching the insomnia patient to relax during the day that they can sleep better at night.

Meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy played a role in alleviating insomnia symptoms, allowing the patients to be able to reach a deeper REM or non-REM sleep. While using these techniques, groups used a variety of yoga, meditation, kept sleep diaries, and underwent general health education to improve their physical fitness.
