Living With Hand Pain

Hand injuries are a common malady that often affects the finger, wrist or hand that which causes pain and swelling inside the limb area or joints.

These injuries usually occur during work, accidental trips and falls, work done around the home, sports and other activities, and fistfights. The overall risk of injuring a wrist, hand or finger is highest when participating in contact sports such as soccer, wrestling, football, or sports that involve high amounts of speed such as skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and biking. Sports that also utilize equipment like ski poles, racquets, hockey sticks also increase the risk of injury.

Children, for the most part, injure their hand, finger or wrist during accidental falls or while at play while elderly patients are at a much higher risk for fractures and injuries due to reduced muscle mass and weakened bone strength.

Injuries or pain can occur in the fingers, wrist or hand via injury or illness, including carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures, dislocation, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, trigger finger, or Dupuytran's contracture which is a hereditary condition that thickens the tissue beneath the skin beneath the palm.

Migraine Link to Breast Cancer

According to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, women who experience chronic migraine headaches are at a significantly lower risk of breast cancer.

Because of the hormone related triggers, there is a direct correlation between migraines and breast cancer, said Dr. Christopher Li.

Women that have a history of migraines are at a 30-percent less risk of cancer.

Environment Affects Sleep

In a study conducted at the Sousze Sleep Center in Hamburg, Germany, it was found that the root cause of more than 40-percent of all sleep related disorders or problems had an environmental cause.

"This was a progressive, three year study in which we asked a hundred patients to keep accurate logs and record their sleep experiences, including what would disturb them," said Dr. Sousze.
