Ozone Injections to Help Disc Pain

The University of Toronto has found that an experimental treatment utilizing ozone gas injections into the spine may help in lower-back pain where herniated disks are related.

One researcher has treated nearly 50 patients, using a combination of oxygen and ozone injections since 2005. Studies have suggested that this type of therapy actually assists in shrinking the disks that have herniated.

The procedure was originally developed in Italy where 14,000 patients have been treated using nothing more than a local anesthetic to deliver the ozone treatment to the herniated disc. According to researchers, most patients report a marked decrease in pain within 48 hours of being treated.

Because of this relatively non-invasive procedure, researchers theorize that it could become standard procedure in a few short years to do low complications and quicker recovery times for the patient.
